2023 construction holiday dates
The construction holiday was made official by government decree in 1970 and is written into employee working conditions. Summer 1971 was the first time a construction holiday was held in Quebec. Note that while collective agreements provide that work sites must be closed during this break, they also provide for certain exceptions.
Summer construction holiday
It’s estimated that during the summer construction holiday, about one quarter of Quebec’s active workforce also takes their vacation. For over 35 years, the last 2 full weeks (Sunday to Saturday) of July marked the construction holiday. Now it straddles the months of July and August.
Winter construction holiday
Less well known is the winter construction holiday. Just like the summer holiday, construction sites are closed for two weeks during the holiday season.
